Seeing light, then colors

Bismillah.

We mortals take many things for granted.

Today, I realized better of this one simple fact, that one should acknowledge the presence of light, for without it one sees no colors. That we should in fact see light before seeing the colors. I hope it makes sense to you.

Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi said in the Mathnawi as translated by Dr. Ibrahim Gamard and Rawan Farhadi,  in a chapter on 'Things Are Revealed By Their Opposites':

You never see red, green and reddish brown until you
see light prior to seeing these three colors.
But because your mind was distracted by color, the
colors became a veil to you from perceiving the light.
Since the colors are hidden at night, you have therefore
found that the sight of color is necessarily due to light.
For without external light, there isn't any sight of color.
It is the same way with the sight of inward mental colors.
The outward light is from the sun and from the stars,
but the inward light is from the reflection of the lights of Divine Loftiness.

Our sight is quick to land on colors. We take for granted the existence of light that makes it possible in the first place. We see the manifestation of many colors but we tend to overlook the one light that causes us to perceive those colors. But Saidina Umar al-Khattab is not like that, for he said: "I see not something without seeing God before it." He sees the cause first and then the effects. He sees light before seeing the colors.

In life we have the tendency to focus and get carried away by thousands of colors that we forget the source of the creation - just one source, just one light.

Pray Allah show us things as they really are.
Allahumma arini haqa'iq al ashya-i kama hiya.

Jumaah Mubarrak!
